Writing an expert report and reading one are different things. We write no new report and reinterpret nothing. Our whole task is to reproduce, as they stand, the findings the expert recorded in that report, and to show where the documents in the file contradict one another. To see that two official documents fail to agree calls for careful reading, not a licence.
These are not alternatives to one another. The domestic remedies concerning the objections and the applications to reopen the proceedings in the file are exhausted; the accused and their families are left with no other forum in which to be heard. Through this work we seek to voice the accused's objections — objectively, and once again through the documents in the file — on behalf of those who cannot afford counsel to reach the international courts, and so to open the way to international review. Our aim is not to pressure the courts, but to make the facts contained in the documents visible, and to ask that the unresolved questions be investigated, thoroughly and independently.
The work is independent; it is backed by no party, institution, or family. With today's means, the capital such a work requires is only some care, some time, and a good deal of patience.
